TU's Banquet

TU's Annual Banquet was a lively affair. There was much activity before dinner with the silent auction, getting in on the drawings, and of course, fellowship. After dinner we were honored to have the past recipient of the Baylor Landrum III Award  present this year's recipient. You think you know all the members and then you realize that you have only scratched the surface. Congratulations go to Frank Elsen for his contributions for a life time of work making our lives safer and healthier and for his many contributions to conservation.

After the award was presented, everyone scrambled to pull out their tickets for the drawings for there were many. And with a last minute check on bids, the silent auction was closed.

This is one of our biggest fund raisers and again, we were very successful. A grand thank you not only to the organizers, but also those who made the generous donations to the drawings and silent auction.

And a thank you to Larry Lewis and his wife, Vicki, who greeted us at the door.

Baylor Landrum III Award 2008

The Baylor Landrum III Award was created in 2004 to honor a member of our Chapter for outstanding service to Trout Unlimited. It is named for Baylor Landrum III who was an active member of our chapter, a great supporter of causes, past president of TU and an avid fisherman. Unfortunately, Baylor died of cancer several years ago (2001) at an early age.

This year’s recipient has had an active lifetime of service to the environment, to our water and to Trout Unlimited.

  • Joined TU in 1987

  • 1992 received the Governor’s Award from Brereton Jones at the Kentucky Governor’s Conference on the Environment for his work on the Union Underwear plant’s discharge of salt water into the Cumberland River. TU won that battle with his persistent help

  • 1994 received the League of Kentucky Sportsmen Conservation Achievement Award

  • 1997 Tom Bennett, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife commissioner, awarded him the Wildlife Stewardship Award for wildlife conservation

  • 1997 received the coveted Harry Caudill Award from the Cumberland Chapter of the Sierra Club in memory of Mary Bingham. His work as a volunteer environmental activist and his noteworthy accomplishments included serving on the Lake Cumberland Trust Board and their Technical Advisory Committee working with dischargers and regulators from the Cumberland’s Wolf Creek Dam and his investigation into the reduction of pollution in the River were cited

  • 1998 was elected to the Board of the Kentucky Conservation Committee

  • Very active in the Kentucky Waterways Alliance fighting stream pollution

  • Past president of Louisville TU and serves on the National Leadership Council for Kentucky in Trout Unlimited

  • 1998 was President of the Kentucky Environmental Quality Commission and received their Education and Outreach Award

During his working years, he was a professional pharmacist for Pfizer Company and helped organize and run the Sabin Oral Polio Vaccine immunization program in Louisville. I cannot leave this important part of his life out of my introduction. There were 2 Sabin Oral PolioVaccine Sundays in Louisville in the late 1950’s and 538,625 people were immunized against polio. This led to the successful elimination of polio in Louisville. I’m sure that those of you old enough to remember the liquid vaccine drops on the sugar cube may have received it from this man

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you the 2008 Baylor Landrum III Award winner for outstanding service…..

Mr. Frank Elsen

Congratulations Frank from all the members of TU. We are proud of all your work and your contributions.
